Do you need a plan to lose weight, or can you wing it?
The verdict
You need one. Structure beats improvisation in the behavioral research, every time.
Structure and self-monitoring are the strongest behavioral predictors of success. Strong evidence.
Winging it feels flexible and adult. The behavior research disagrees: structure and self-monitoring are the two strongest predictors of who succeeds. A plan does not need to be complicated. It needs to answer three questions before the moment of decision: what am I eating, when am I moving, and how will I know it is working.
Decisions made in the moment default to whatever is easiest, and the modern food environment has made sure the easiest option is never the right one.
