Does lifting weights help you lose fat?

The verdict

Yes, and it is the most important training habit on the board. Muscle is the engine.

Resistance training is the single biggest lever for keeping muscle while losing fat. Strong evidence.

Cardio burns calories during the workout. Lifting changes what your weight loss is made of. In a calorie deficit without resistance training, a big chunk of what you lose is muscle, which drops your resting burn rate and sets up the rebound. Lift two or three times a week and the loss comes overwhelmingly from fat instead.

This matters double for anyone on a GLP-1 medication, where studies estimate up to half the loss can be lean mass unless you train against it.
