Does magnesium help with weight loss?
The verdict
Not for most people. Meta-analyses show no weight-loss effect unless you are actually deficient.
Magnesium shows no weight-loss effect in people who are not deficient. Moderate evidence.
Magnesium has a fantastic reputation and a mediocre evidence file for weight loss. Pooled trials in the general population show no meaningful effect on weight or body fat. Where it earns its keep is in people who are genuinely deficient or insulin resistant, where correcting the deficiency helps sleep and glucose handling.
So the influencer calling it fantastic is half right: fantastic for the deficient, an expensive nap for everyone else.
Do this instead
- Get blood work before buying supplements. Guessing is expensive.
- Food first: nuts, seeds, leafy greens, beans cover most people.
- If sleep is your real problem, fix the schedule and the screen habit before the supplement rack.
