Do fruits and vegetables actually help you lose weight?
The verdict
Yes. Fiber and water volume fill you up before the calories add up.
Fiber increases fullness and lowers overall calorie intake. Strong evidence.
Fruits and vegetables are mostly water and fiber, which means they take up room in your stomach at a very low calorie cost. People who eat more produce reliably eat fewer total calories without trying harder, because fullness does the work willpower usually fails at.
No single vegetable burns fat. That is not the mechanism. The mechanism is displacement: a plate that is half produce leaves less room for the calorie-dense stuff.
Do this instead
- Add produce to meals you already eat instead of building new meals from scratch.
- Frozen vegetables count and never go bad. Zero prep excuse.
- Fruit before a meal blunts appetite. Fruit juice does the opposite, so eat it, don't drink it.
