Does eating more protein help you lose weight?
The verdict
Yes. Protein is the most useful macronutrient for fat loss, and the evidence is strong.
Higher protein preserves muscle and controls hunger in a calorie deficit. Strong evidence.
Protein does two jobs at once. It is the most filling thing you can eat per calorie, which means you naturally eat less without white-knuckling it. And it gives your body the raw material to hold onto muscle while the fat comes off, which keeps your metabolism from sliding down with the scale.
Trials consistently show higher-protein diets beat lower-protein diets on hunger, on muscle retention, and often on total loss, even when calories are matched. This is one of the least controversial findings in nutrition.
Do this instead
- Build every meal around a palm-sized portion of protein first, then add the rest.
- Eggs, chicken, fish, lean beef, Greek yogurt, and beans all count. Variety keeps it sustainable.
- If you are on a GLP-1 medication, protein has to be deliberate, because appetite suppression makes it the first thing to disappear.
