Does sitting all day cause weight gain?
The verdict
It hurts, even if you work out. Long unbroken sitting is its own risk factor.
Long unbroken sitting links to worse metabolic health even in people who exercise regularly. Moderate evidence.
Here is the uncomfortable finding: a hard hour in the gym does not fully cancel ten motionless hours in a chair. Studies tracking sitting time show worse blood sugar handling, more belly fat, and higher metabolic risk in heavy sitters, even among people who formally exercise. The body reads long stillness as its own signal.
The fix is not quitting your desk job. It is breaking the stillness. Movement snacks, two or three minutes every hour, measurably improve blood sugar after meals, and a walking pad or standing stretch turns dead hours into gentle burn.
Do this instead
- Stand or walk two minutes every hour. Set the timer once, obey it forever.
- Take calls on your feet. Meetings that can be walks should be walks.
- A 10-minute walk after lunch is the single best-evidenced desk-worker habit.
