The Verdict Library

Can you lose weight eating fast food?

The verdict

It is possible but stacked against you. Restaurant meals average hundreds more calories than home versions.

Restaurant and takeout meals run significantly higher in calories than home-cooked equivalents. Strong evidence.

When researchers compare restaurant and delivery meals to the same meal cooked at home, the restaurant version reliably lands hundreds of calories heavier: more oil, more sugar, bigger portions, plus the fries you didn't plan on. Eat from someone else's kitchen five times a week and someone else is deciding your calories five times a week.

You do not need a zero-takeout life. You need the default to flip back to your own kitchen, where the portions and ingredients answer to you.
