Is diet soda bad for weight loss?
The verdict
Mid. Better than regular soda, worse than water, and the long-term evidence is genuinely mixed.
Swapping sugary soda for diet cuts calories; long-term effects are genuinely mixed. Weak evidence.
In controlled trials, swapping sugary soda for diet soda cuts calories and modestly helps weight. In observational data, heavy diet soda drinkers have larger waists, though it is hard to untangle whether the soda causes that or overweight people simply drink more diet soda.
Verdict: if diet soda replaces regular soda, it is a win. If it justifies a bigger meal on the side, it is a wash. Nobody should pretend it is health food, and nobody needs to panic about it either.
Do this instead
- Use diet soda as a bridge off regular soda, not a forever habit.
- Make water the default and diet soda the exception.
- Watch the pairing effect: a diet drink next to a large fries is not a health strategy.
