Is peanut butter good for weight loss?
The verdict
It depends entirely on the portion. Measured, it helps. From the jar, it hurts.
Nut butters and bars are healthy but calorie-dense. Portion decides whether they help or hurt. Moderate evidence.
Peanut butter carries protein, fiber, and fats that keep you full. It also carries almost 200 calories in two tablespoons, and nobody in recorded history has eaten one spoon standing at the counter.
The same logic covers protein bars, trail mix, granola, nuts, and every other healthy-but-dense food: the label is fine, the portion is the problem.
Do this instead
- Measure it. Two tablespoons, on purpose, not straight from the jar.
- Read protein bar labels: many are candy bars with a gym membership.
- Keep dense foods out of arm's reach. Distance is portion control.
