Is skipping breakfast good for weight loss?
The verdict
It can be. Fasting is a legitimate tool that works by shrinking your eating window, not by magic.
Intermittent fasting matches standard dieting in trials. It helps by shrinking the eating window. Strong evidence.
Breakfast is not sacred. Meta-analyses show intermittent fasting produces about the same weight loss as ordinary calorie restriction. It does not rev your metabolism or unlock fat-burning mode. It simply gives some people fewer hours in which to overeat, and for those people it works beautifully.
The catch: if skipping breakfast leaves you ravenous and you inhale a double lunch plus snacks, the tool is working against you. Fasting is a fit-your-life question, not a superiority question.
Do this instead
- Try an eating window that matches your life, like noon to 8pm, for two weeks.
- Break the fast with protein, not pastry.
- If you take medication or your blood sugar runs low, talk to your doctor before fasting seriously.
