Does beer really cause belly fat?
The verdict
Heavy drinking, yes. The belly you are fighting is partly poured.
Heavier drinking tracks with more belly fat and acutely lowers testosterone. Moderate evidence.
The beer belly is not a myth with a mean name. Larger cohort studies link heavier drinking to disproportionately more visceral fat, the deep belly fat wrapped around organs. Alcohol also acutely suppresses testosterone and fat burning while your body prioritizes clearing it, and the calories themselves are empty by definition.
Light drinking shows much smaller effects. This is a dose problem: a weekend beer is a rounding error, a nightly six-pack is a second dinner with hormonal side effects.
Do this instead
- Count your real weekly number first. Most people are surprised.
- Set alcohol-free weekdays as the default, and watch sleep improve within a week.
- Never drink your calories and eat them too: the wings that ride along with the beers are half the damage.
