Is a 48-hour fast good for weight loss?
The verdict
The evidence is thin, the stress is real, and it shows no advantage over a normal deficit. Doctor first.
Extended fasting shows real side effects in supervised studies and little advantage over a normal deficit. Weak evidence.
Long fasts produce dramatic scale drops, which is mostly water and glycogen performing a magic trick. Supervised studies of multi-day fasting report dizziness, fatigue, inflammation markers, and platelet changes, and show little evidence of better fat loss than an ordinary calorie deficit held over time.
For anyone on blood sugar or blood pressure medication, pregnant, or with any history of disordered eating, extended fasting moves from questionable to genuinely dangerous. This is the one habit on our board we score with a safety flag: if you want to fast beyond a day, that is a medical conversation, not a challenge video.
Do this instead
- Use a daily eating window if you like fasting. Same mechanism, none of the drama.
- Chase the boring deficit held for months, not the dramatic one held for 48 hours.
- Talk to your doctor before any fast past 24 hours. Non-negotiable with medications.
