Are you ever too old to lose weight?
The verdict
No. Metabolism barely moves from 25 to 60. The excuse moves more than it does.
Metabolic rate is essentially flat from the 20s through the 60s, adjusted for body size. Moderate evidence.
The landmark study on this pooled metabolic data across the human lifespan and found something that shocked everyone: adjusted for body size, metabolism is essentially flat from the mid-20s all the way to about 60. The middle-age slowdown people blame is mostly accumulated habits: less movement, less muscle, more convenience food, worse sleep.
That is genuinely good news, because habits are fixable at any age. Trials show older adults lose weight and build muscle successfully, with resistance training mattering more, not less, as the decades stack up.
Do this instead
- Lift twice a week. After 40 this stops being optional and becomes the whole ballgame.
- Protein needs go up with age, not down.
- Retire the phrase 'at my age.' Your mitochondria never said it.
