Why weekends destroy your weight loss (and how to stop it)
The verdict
Because the math is brutal: five good days cannot outrun two wild ones.
Weekend overshoot is a top reason measured intake exceeds what people believe they eat. Moderate evidence.
Here is the arithmetic nobody runs. A disciplined Monday-to-Friday deficit of 300 calories a day banks 1,500 calories. One Saturday of drinks, a big dinner, and a lazy brunch can put back 2,000 or more. The week nets out at zero, the scale does not move, and it feels like your body is broken. It is not. The weekend just voted last.
Researchers see this pattern constantly when they compare what people report eating to what measurement shows: the gap lives almost entirely in weekends and celebrations that mentally did not count.
Do this instead
- Keep the same breakfast and walk on weekends. Anchor habits hold the structure.
- Plan the indulgence: pick the one meal that is worth it and enjoy it on purpose, instead of grazing through 48 hours.
- Weigh in Monday morning. Knowing the vote is coming changes Saturday's behavior.
